Degrees Celsius to Degrees Fahrenheit

0 degrees Celsius equals 32 degrees Fahrenheit, and each additional degree adds a fixed amount set by the two scales.

°F = (°C × 9/5) + 32

Conversion Formulas

From Celsius

  • °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32
  • K = °C + 273.15
  • °R = (°C + 273.15) × 9/5

To Celsius

  • °C = (°F - 32) × 5/9
  • °C = K - 273.15
  • °C = (°R × 5/9) - 273.15

About This Conversion

Celsius to Fahrenheit is the conversion most people meet while cooking from a recipe written on the other side of the Atlantic, or while reading a weather forecast abroad. Because the two scales have different zero points, you cannot scale a Celsius value the way you would scale meters into feet: the multiply-then-add step is not optional.

The mental shortcut worth learning is "double it and add 30". It is accurate to within about 3 °F between 0 °C and 30 °C, which covers nearly every weather and room-temperature use. It drifts badly at oven temperatures, where 180 °C is 356 °F rather than the 390 °F the shortcut suggests, so use the real formula for cooking.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is 20 °C in Fahrenheit?

20 °C equals 68 °F. Multiply 20 by 1.8 to get 36, then add 32.

What is a normal body temperature in Fahrenheit?

37 °C, the conventional figure for normal body temperature, equals 98.6 °F exactly.

What oven temperature is 180 °C in Fahrenheit?

180 °C is 356 °F. Most recipes and oven dials round this to 350 °F, which is close enough for baking.

Why can I not just multiply Celsius by 1.8?

Because the scales start in different places. 0 °C is 32 °F, not 0 °F, so the +32 offset has to be added after scaling.
