About This Conversion

Fahrenheit to Celsius comes up when reading US weather reports, US recipes, or the spec sheet of a product sold into the American market. The subtraction has to happen first: taking 5/9 of the Fahrenheit value before removing the 32-degree offset gives an answer that is wrong by about 18 degrees.

Useful anchors that need no arithmetic: 32 °F is freezing, 50 °F is 10 °C, 68 °F is 20 °C, 86 °F is 30 °C, and −40 is the same number on both scales. A US oven set to 350 °F is 177 °C, which is why European recipes call the same setting 180 °C.
