About This Conversion

Meters to feet is the everyday bridge between metric and US customary length: room dimensions, building heights, swimming pool lengths, altitude. The factor is fixed by definition rather than measured, because the international yard has been defined as exactly 0.9144 m since 1959, which makes one foot exactly 0.3048 m.

When the result describes a person or a room, the decimal is usually the wrong format. 1.8 m is 5.905 ft, which nobody says: convert the 0.905 ft into inches by multiplying by 12 and you get the useful answer, 5 ft 10.9 in.
