About This Conversion

Megabytes to mebibytes converts between the two systems that both get called "MB". A megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes; a mebibyte is 1,048,576 bytes. One MB is therefore 0.9537 MiB, a gap of about 4.6 percent.

The IEC introduced the binary prefixes in 1998 precisely to end this ambiguity, but adoption is partial. Storage vendors, network equipment and most download counters use decimal MB; Linux tools, RAM sizes and several file managers use binary and often still print "MB". When two tools disagree about the same file by roughly five percent, this is why.
