Why decimal feet are useless here

Ask a general-purpose converter for 180 cm in feet and it returns 5.90551 feet. Nobody has ever described their height that way. The number is correct and unusable, because feet and inches is a mixed-radix format and the decimal has to be converted a second time.

The second step is to multiply the decimal part by 12. In 5.90551 ft, 0.90551 × 12 gives 10.9 inches, so the height is 5 ft 10.9 in. The chart below has that step already done.

Where the rounding bites

Watch the boundary cases. 182.88 cm is exactly 6 feet, and anything from about 182.2 cm rounds to 6 ft 0 in at one decimal place. A chart that rounds carelessly will show 5 ft 12 in, which is arithmetically defensible and obviously wrong.

The other place it matters is documents. Passports, licences and medical records in the US use feet and inches to the nearest whole inch, so 175 cm becomes 5 ft 9 in rather than 5 ft 8.9 in. Rounding to the nearest inch is the right behaviour there, not extra precision.

Converting a height by hand

Divide the centimetres by 2.54 to get total inches, then divide by 12. The whole number is the feet and the remainder is the inches. For 175 cm: 175 ÷ 2.54 = 68.9 inches, and 68.9 ÷ 12 is 5 with 8.9 left over, giving 5 ft 8.9 in.

Going the other way, multiply the feet by 12, add the inches, then multiply by 2.54. A 5 ft 10 in height is 70 inches, which is exactly 177.8 cm. The trap is writing that as 5.10 feet, which is a different number entirely at 155.4 cm.
