Minutes to Hours

Formula:

Hours = minutes ÷ 60

Worked example:

90 minutes ÷ 60 = 1.5 hours

Minutes to hours is the conversion behind every timesheet, billing entry and cooking schedule. Divide by 60, and the awkward part is what to do with the remainder: 90 minutes is 1.5 hours as a decimal but "one hour thirty" when spoken, and payroll systems almost always want the decimal.

The decimal form is where mistakes happen, because 1.30 is not one hour thirty minutes. Thirty minutes is 0.5 hours, and 20 minutes is 0.333 hours. Entering 7.45 for a seven-hour forty-five-minute shift underpays by twelve minutes each time, which is why timesheet software converts to quarter-hour decimals of 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75.
