Minutes to Seconds

Formula:

Seconds = minutes × 60

Worked example:

15 minutes × 60 = 900 seconds

Minutes to seconds multiplies by 60, the step needed whenever a duration has to be entered into something that counts in seconds: timeouts, cache lifetimes, exposure settings, interval timers.

Configuration files are where this matters most. A cache set to 3600 is one hour, 86400 is one day, and 604800 is one week. Those three numbers are worth recognising on sight, because a misplaced zero turns a one-hour cache into a ten-hour one.

Running paces and song lengths are the everyday case. A 4:30 mile pace is 270 seconds per mile and a 3:45 song is 225 seconds: convert the minutes, then add the leftover seconds, so 4 × 60 + 30 = 270. Race-timing and music software store the second count, not the mm:ss form.
